All at sea in the bedroom

    Sea-Themed-Bedroom-Livingetc-HousetohomeSo that’s what they mean by a seabed…

This bedroom has romance of a different kind – that of faraway places and exotic destinations. In 25 Beautiful Homes, our homeowners tell us again and again that, in it’s own way, the bedroom is the most special room of the house. But of course it is, it’s where you go to watch TV, then sleep! Personalising it is vital, of course, and this owner clearly has a love of seafaring – a conch here, an anchor there… And that fishing net above the bed is inspired. It’s certainly caught me – hook, line and sinker…

At any one time, men have only one thing on their mind. Yes I’ve just been reading a newspaper article confirming that men are unable to multitask. Scientists scanned the brains of 949 young men and women in the biggest investigation of its kind to date. Using hi-tech diffusion MRI imaging, they mapped the connections between

    How to transform a room

    50+ Transform_COVERv2_lores

When I saw 50 Simple Ways to Transform Any Room, out in the shops today, I was a little surprised at its content. Having two teenage sons, I’d say the average male’s top tips on how to transform a room would be:

    1. Have your friends round regularly and snack while watching TV in the front room, leaving behind as many pizza boxes, crisp packets and pop/beer bottles as possible. Why not rearrange the furniture while you’re at it?

    2. When you walk in the door after a hard day at school, kick off your shoes in the hall, drop bags just inside the front door, ideally where people can trip over them. Pretend you haven’t seen the empty coat stand three short steps away – just chuck your jacket on the floor.

    3. When taking off your clothes at the end of the day – or anytime, come to think of it – leave your clothes strewn around and NOT in a tidy pile. You could always try to throw them in the direction of the washing basket but from no closer than 15 feet. And try not to hit the half-empty bowls of cereal lined up beside the bed.

If all of this sounds like you’re making an unreasonable amount of mess, do not worry. Something magic happens overnight: in the morning you’ll notice the front room is spotless, the hall is incredibly tidy, and the bedroom is just like new.

I’m still looking for the chapter that includes these 3 tips in 50 Simple Ways to Transform Any Room but no matter. It’s a special publication packed full of inspirational ideas for giving any space in your home a brand-new look. Stunning images of beautiful rooms  sit alongside practical tips from the experts at Britain’s best-loved homes magazines and leading interiors website Housetohome.co.uk.  There are quick links to bonus online content to enhance your knowledge, and an essential guide How to Plan a Room with Wow.

    ethnic-pillowsEthnic gone mad…

Trends pervade every aspect of our lives: in what we eat, where we go for our holidays, our clothes and, not least, in the home. I like to think that being ‘in the business’, I’ve become inured to the influence of the marketing men – and women. Well that’s what I’d like to think… I was looking at a Freshome.com feature on Trends for 2014 and this is its Top 10 – (my comments in brackets):
    1. Merging indoors and out (I suspect this is the future)

    2. Ethnic prints  (but we’re not ready for the Aztec print revival)

    3. The demise of beige (and good riddance…)

    4. Brass is back (Bet Lynch was brassy – and that wasn’t classy)

    5. Corduroy (still reminds me of my maths teachers pants,  but it adds up)

    6. Fibre art & macramé (at its best when Tarzan’s swinging on it)

    7. Floral textiles (let’s face it, this is NEVER going to go away)

    8. Glamour (I’m from oop north – prefer a down-to-earth look)

    9. Hair on hide (a bit itchy as seat covers but fine on rugs!)

    10. Compatible colours and accents (but avoiding over-coordination)

Am I right or am I wrong – let me know!
