    Seaside schemes that rock

Not that I’m counting down or anything, but in a few short hours I shall be boarding a train and happily catching up on four-and-a-half hours of reading while being whisked away to Cornwall, where I shall take walks on the beach, breathe in the salty air, exist on Cornish pasties and chips, drink wine with my mum and, based on the contents of my suitcase, wear every piece of white-and-blue striped clothing I own (six items at the last count – I am nothing if not a walking cliché.)

    Shelf life

The ‘shelfie’ craze, where people share images of stylish shelf displays online, continues to gather momentum. Whether you want to show your intelligence with a library of literary classics, colourful collectables or gorgeous glassware, it’s a brilliant way to express your creativity while adding personality to a room. The owner of this sitting room has put together a pretty display with an easy breezy coastal feel, where light filters through the delicate blue glass. Tall see-through shelves are a great idea because they can also serve as a room divider in an open-plan scheme and contents can be admired from both sides of the room.

    Going coastal

    by  • April 15, 2016 • Stylish living • 1 Comment

Glancing out of my window right now, at lashing rain and thundery skies, I can’t quite say I’m brimming with optimism for the weekend’s weather – but come hail or high water, I’m off to Brighton. Cool coastal look

Coastal inspired bedroom, grey walls, sisal flooring, pebble themed rug, reclaimed wooden plank bench, pink bed linen, wooden plank headboard, exposed lightbulbs hanging on long cords, tree trunk style side tables, floating shelving, IH, 08/2012

When you think of seaside style, watery shades of blues, greens and aquamarines usually spring to mind. But the coastal look has come a long way, and you don’t even have to own a beautiful beachside home to enjoy the easy, breezy, laid-back vibe.

    Stair crazy!

    Stairway to, er, eleven…

Ask anybody who’s anybody (daahling), and you’ll know that stylish staircases are de rigueur right now. Yes, they’re the new hub of the home. Go to the trendiest gaffs and you’ll see the great and the good hangin’ out in the hallway, lingerin’ on the landing and fraternisin’ at the foot of the stairs. So what’s at the heart of this renaissance in risers? Don’t ask me, but Nick Willson of Nick Willson Architects, says: ‘The stair has a functional aspect, but can also be very beautiful and act as a stunning centrepiece to a space bringing in light.’  And Architect Michael Crowley points out: ‘The design of a staircase is not purely an aesthetic decision. This is one of the crucial elements of the house because you don’t only see it and utilise it, but daily you touch it. It’s the tactile centre of the building.’
With that in mind, take a look at these 6 ideas for staircases – who knows where it will lead to? Probably the bedroom…
