It’s in the order of their hedgerows
It’s in the way their curtains open and close
It’s in the look they give you down their nose
All part of decency’s jigsaw I suppose
These lyrics, from Respectable Street by XTC, sum up perfectly how we’re all slaves to appearances. When you decorate and furnish your home are you doing it to reflect your own tastes or to create the right impression on those who might visit? It may well be unconscious but who hasn’t thought ‘Those new curtains will impress so-and-so’ or ‘I’d love to paint the walls that colour but what will friends think?’. Which is why I admire schemes that are daring, like this one. What would the neighbours say about this one: ‘It’s dark’? ‘It’s gloomy’? ‘It’s lacking variety of colour’? ‘It’s outrageous!’ But I’d say: ‘It’s immaterial!” It may set tongues wagging but this room puts up two fingers to Respectable Street.
