It’s the 14th February today – and we all know what that means. Yes, it’s the day we start sprinkling slug pellets on our flower beds, to prevent the little critters from eating all our plants. Which hopefully means our gardens will look like this, come summer.

    warm-blue-bedroom

Don’t forget the clocks go back this weekend. So we can enjoy an extra hour in bed on sunday morning and this bedroom looks like the perfect place to do that.

With its simple mismatched bedding, layered with cosy blankets, giving it a soft, understated charm.

It’s not all black and white

One big trend in kitchens that shows no sign of waning in popularity is the industrial look. We can all conjure up an image of this style: metro wall tiles, utilitarian wood or metal shelving and worktops, reclaimed enamel pendant lights, and functional pieces. Another strong element of the industrial look is a largely white/grey palette – but what if the mono look isn’t your thing?

If you’re not blessed with a rolling, green garden, it can be easy to let what outdoor space you do have become an afterthought, or a dumping ground. But with some clever styling ideas, even a small terrace or patio can become a vibrant and welcoming spot to enjoy the summer (now we just need the weather to cooperate!)

My idea of the perfect summery bedroom scheme would involve lots of white; cool, crisp white bedlinen, simple white painted furniture and walls and barely there floaty white curtains. So the polar opposite to this bold and bright scheme, then.

    What would the neighbours say…

    living-room

It’s in the order of their hedgerows
It’s in the way their curtains open and close
It’s in the look they give you down their nose
All part of decency’s jigsaw I suppose

These lyrics, from Respectable Street by XTC, sum up perfectly how we’re all slaves to appearances. When you decorate and furnish your home are you doing it to reflect your own tastes or to create the right impression on those who might visit? It may well be unconscious but who hasn’t thought ‘Those new curtains will impress so-and-so’ or ‘I’d love to paint the walls that colour but what will friends think?’. Which is why I admire schemes that are daring, like this one. What would the neighbours say about this one: ‘It’s dark’? ‘It’s gloomy’? ‘It’s lacking variety of colour’? ‘It’s outrageous!’ But I’d say: ‘It’s immaterial!” It may set tongues wagging but this room puts up two fingers to Respectable Street.

     Say it, loud and proud…

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (and again…) but there’s a time and a place for being coordinated. Like when you’re walking (otherwise you’d fall over), doing Zumba, flying in formationfor the
