    Sew easy

I love The Great British Bake Off, was completely hooked on The Great Pottery Throw Down and now eagerly await each episode of The Great British Sewing Bee (BBC2, 9pm, Monday).

I loved sewing classes when I was at school, but apart from sewing on the odd button, or sewing up a hem that’s fallen down, I’ve barely touched a needle and thread since.

However, I love the idea of having a little sewing room. Especially one like this, with its shabby chic charm, complete with old-school vintage sewing machine.

    Balancing act

Whatever I know about interior design has been learnt through observation – it certainly isn’t taught and definitely isn’t theoretical. But believe it or not, there is science behind good design, whether that be interior, exterior, product, graphic… As soon as I saw this image, it appealed on a certain level. It wasn’t the monochrome (I like a bit of colour in my life), it wasn’t the headboards (a little too feminine) and it certainly wasn’t

window seat with leaf print cushions

It’s getting lighter a little bit earlier every day and right now the sun is streaming in through the windows. However it’s still far too cold to even contemplate actually sitting in the garden.

So what I need is a pretty window seat like this, where I could sit and enjoy the view, from the comfort and warmth of my sitting room.

Wake up and smell the coffee

It’s the small things in life that count (someone once said) and as far as holidays go, the May Day one is as small as it gets. But everyone I’m talking to at the moment is so looking forward to 5.30 on Friday evening – and most of them aren’t going anywhere other than home. You don’t need to – what better feeling than waking up on Saturday morning in the warmth and comfort of your own boudoir, to be greeted by coffee and warm croissants on a tray presented by your loved one. Hand on heart, it’s something I ALWAYS do for my wife – each May Day bank holiday, regular as clockwork. I’m a slave to that woman…

    Good enough to eat

Some things you can’t put into words or even explain to yourself – for example, I’m not sure what it is about this room that I most like, but like it I certainly do. It looks very tactile with its soft throws casually, er, thrown over the arms. And the coir matting is wonderfully coarse, while the smooth form of the hanging lamp looks very strokeable. I love the subtle colour scheme, too – it’s all of a similar hue but works without having the need for the odd garish accent colour. Clearly the owners are very restrained – they must be, they’ve hardly touched their Easter eggs!
